Historical version 6 of Locale Strand (view current version)

An area of London around the historic shopping thoroughfare (though it has been displaced as the centre of London shopping since the 19th centry by Oxford Street and that part of the West End). It is within the City of Westminster.

It runs east from Trafalgar Square and becomes Fleet Street at the boundary of the City of London.

The word "strand" means "the land bordering a sea, lake, or river". Although the Strand now lies some distance from the river, the buildings on its southern side used to look directly onto the Thames; infilling of the Thames for the construction of the Victoria Embankment in 1865-1870 moved the river further away from the Strand.
