Locale: Strand

An area of London around the historic shopping thoroughfare (though it has been displaced as the centre of London shopping since the 19th Century by Oxford Street and that part of the West End). It is within the City of Westminster and in modern times is dominated at the eastern end by Aldwych and the Royal Courts of Justice.

It runs east from Trafalgar Square and becomes Fleet Street at the boundary of the City of London.

The word "strand" means "the land bordering a sea, lake, or river". Although the Strand now lies some distance from the river, the buildings on its southern side used to look directly onto the Thames; infilling of the Thames for the construction of the Victoria Embankment in 1865-1870 moved the river further away from the Strand.

The area to the south of the Strand is sometimes known as "Adelphi".
