Still And Star, E1 8AH

  • 1 Little Somerset Street

The Still & Star was a pub near Aldgate bus station. According to the Dec 2017/Jan 2018 London Drinker, it has closed and its future is "uncertain".

The information below is retained for historical purposes.

Pub near Aldgate bus station.

Note that it's not open at weekends.

This small, traditional pub is situated right next to Aldgate bus station; indeed, the outdoor drinking area at the side looks right onto said bus station. Inside, it's quite narrow but goes back a fair way, to a little sofa area at the back. There are old leaded windows at the front and side.

Kake and Ewan visited on a Monday early evening in September 2011. When we arrived around 5:15pm, there were a few people already in, but no trouble finding somewhere to sit despite the small size of the place. Music was playing, incongruously perky (Barbie Girl, Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick, Saturday Night). The flatscreen at the back was showing the news with the sound off.

All six handpumps were on, offering Chiswick, London Pride, Young's Bitter, Sambrooks Wandle, Adnams Lighthouse, and Batemans England Expects — we paid £3.20 for a half each of Lighthouse and England Expects.

According to the 2012 Good Beer Guide, food is served all day and there's a dartboard. The menu is quite simple, based around things like sandwiches and jacket potatoes, and as of September 2011 is neatly hand-printed photo 1, photo 2.

Accessibility: Step-free to get in, to get to the bar, to get to the seating, and to get to the toilets. However it's quite narrow by the bar, and the toilets aren't huge either.
