Japanese restaurant on Whitecross Street, near Old Street Station.
Manne visited in August 2007. Walking there was the kind of searching stroll where you start wondering if you really are in the right parts of town... All closed storefronts, boarded up doors, worn old buildings. Can there really be a great Japanese place in these surroundings?
Oh yes. Very much so.
I arrived early, and was greeted by the very friendly staff. They brought me a Kirin and some very simple menus. Soon my friends arrived and our sushi and sashimi porn fest began. There is really no other way of describing it. I had so much sashimi tonight it made me feel dirty. In a really good and morish way.
Highlights were yellowtail with jalapeno, lovely seared toro (fatty tuna, it really tastes and feels like the most tender meat you were ever served) and scallops with spicy creamy sauce (the bowl in the above photo with orange goo).
Amazing. Some of the best sushi I have ever had. This is a must visit for anyone who loves sushi, those who want to have some really good sushi, virgins who won't mind trying sushi to see what the fuzz is about or even food cowards who shudder at the thought of raw fish. Heck, even you who absolutely abhor sushi should go here. Pham Sushi will make you change your mind.
They also offer takeaway, and will deliver within 1 mile radius of the restaurant. Last delivery orders 9:45pm. Note that they're closed on Sundays.
(Note also that the Dos Hermanos review linked below suggests that quality here can be variable, though the review is a couple of years old.)
