Shipp's tearooms closed for good in June 2008 after it was [http://www.london-se1.co.uk/news/view/3359|ordered to cease trading] by the Borough Market trustees.

Sadly, the shop is no longer allowed to sell food or drinks due to an issue with the Market lease. The place is still open though, selling porcelains and other tea-time related accessories which is a bit sad considering how nice it was.

Shipp's Tearooms are located on Park Street at Borough Market, between the Monmouth Coffee Co and Neal's Yard Dairy, next to the Market Porter.

The atmosphere is really nice and the decor makes you feel like you're in a doll house. Each table has linen, teapot, flower bucket, cup, and maybe even chair and spoon is different from the others.

It's a proper tearoom, and tea is the only drink you will find here - no coffee or hot chocolate.

Teas on offer include:

  • Ceylon 1 - Pure Ceylon, Earl Grey & Orange Pekoe
  • Postcard Teas - Golden Assam & First Flush Darjeeling
  • East Teas - Green Jasmine & Sencha
  • Organic Herb Trading Co. - Organic Peppermint Leaf & Organic Chamomile Flowers

A wide range of cakes are available, all looking delicious, including Victoria sponge, carrot cake, scones, and chocolate cupcakes. There are some savoury things too. They offer special deals for larger parties.

The place was fairly busy when Katrien and Aurelien visited (around 4:30pm on a Friday), but they got a table straight away. People seem to spend a lot of time over their tea, and turnover was low. It's supposed to close at 5:30pm on weekdays, but we've been able to stay until 6:15pm without feeling in the way.

A pot of tea for two with two cakes cost us about £12.

Last visited by Katrien and Aurelien, February 2008. Opening hours taken from the Shipp's website, March 2008.
