Nigerian restaurant in Erith.
It's split into two halves, having expanded over the years from a single shop unit into the one next door. The left-hand side is somewhat cafe style, with black and white tiles on the floor, red and black pleather chairs and banquettes, distressed wooden tables, and full-height windows at the front. A small bar in the corner is stocked with spirits and canned and bottled beers. The right-hand side is more elaborate, with stone cladding detailing and colourful artwork on the walls.
Kake visited on a Thursday lunchtime in March 2018. There were no other customers when I arrived around 11:45am, but several came in for takeaways while I was there. No music was playing, but a flatscreen was showing a Nigerian news programme with the sound on.
I went for ewa agoyin (mixed beans in a spicy sauce) with fried fish and plantain (£7) photo. The beans had a good texture, part mashed and part whole, and with no chalkiness or tough skins. The flavour of palm oil was evident. The fish was well-done, as is usual with West African food, but the interior remained relatively moist and flaky inside the crisp, chewy-in-a-good-way skin. The plantain was soft and sweet, with some good browning around the edges.
Tap water arrived on request, in a pint glass. Service was generally welcoming and friendly.
Accessibility: Step-free access to the left-hand side via a ramp (right-hand side not checked). No steps from there to the ladies' toilet, which doubles as an accessible one (large cubicle, grab bars, alarm cord, visual fire alarm, etc).
