Historical version 4 of Golden Gate Cake Shop, W1D 5BR (view current version)

Cake shop and bakery just off Gerrard Street in Chinatown. The window display is entirely taken up by birthday/celebration cakes, but inside they have a large range of sweet and savoury Chinese bakery products; pork floss buns, ham and spring onion buns, etc. They even have moon cakes.

At lunchtime the place is full of people (Chinese and otherwise) popping in to grab their midday meal; the buns are generally priced at around 80p-90p and one or two will do you for lunch. Get a tray or paper bag from the right of the door as you go in, along with a pair of tongs to pick things up, and browse the selection. Note that it's really really small, and four or five people will mean it's crowded. Don't expect the staff to speak English.

Kake liked the pork floss bun but was disappointed by the ham and spring onion bun; very low content of both ham and spring onions.

There's no eat-in facility, but if you come out of the shop, turn left, go left again at the end of the street, and follow Gerrard Street along to its east end, you'll find Chinatown's pagoda, which offers shelter and a little table to put your lunch on.
