Randomness Guide to London - Differences between Version 5 and Version 4 of Star, SE18 2UL

Version 5 Version 4

Previously a very old-school pub (see older version of this page), a couple of refurbishments during the 2010s have rendered it very different from its earlier incarnation.
Note: According to the Aug/Sep 2015 London Drinker, since our last visit here the Star has undergone a change of tenant and a refurbishment (as well as a name change from the Star Inn). Hence, some of the information below may be out of date.

Although there are still separate entrances for the "saloon" and "public" sides, with a connection door between, the saloon door was locked when we visited, with access only through what used to be the public side. All the old decor has been swept away, replaced by mustard yellow banquettes, metal-framed school chairs, upholstered sofas, gilt-sprayed radiators, and poster-framed jazz LP sleeves. The removal of the old carpet has revealed a pleasant tesselated woodblock floor, complementing the wood panelling of the walls.
This is very much an old-school pub, with traditional decor and retaining the old-fashioned division into separate bars. The left hand side still has "Saloon Lounge" printed on the door, and features wood-panelled walls, burgundy upholstery, a patterned carpet, padded banquettes, and fully frosted windows. The right hand side has a pool table and presumably corresponds to the old public bar. An internal door connects the two, but each also has its own entrance.

When [[Kake]] and [[Ewan]] visited on a Friday afternoon in May 2019, the handpumps were offering Hogs Back TEA and Timothy Taylor's Landlord. They also had keg taps for Redchurch NZ Pils, Signature Brew Roadie, and Hackney Brewery Kapow. Reggae was playing, not too loud.
[[Kake]] visited on a Saturday afternoon in September 2013. There were two real ales on: Sharp's Doom Bar (£1.60/half) and Courage Best. The Doom Bar was a little cloudy, and came out of the pump quite frothy, but the bar staff were careful to top up the glass after it had settled.

Food appears to consist of pizzas and Sunday roasts.
There were four other customers in the saloon side; the other side was busier. No music was playing, but flatscreens on both sides of the pub were showing football with the sound on.

Accessibility: A step at the public bar entrance. The saloon side has no step to get in, but the entrance to this was locked on our May 2019 visit. No steps once you're inside.
A menu on the bar offered fairly standard pub food: sandwiches, things with chips, etc, though it wasn't clear what times this was available.

Accessibility: At least on the saloon side, there's no step to get in and no steps once you're inside. (Public side not checked for accessibility.)
