A once disappointing local in Peckham, the Montpelier was refurbished in 2007 and now presents itself as something of a gastropub. It had a change of management (and menu) in 2010, but remains on the gastro side.

Decor is stripped wooden floors, with lots of leather chairs along the wall, tables of various sizes, and some large sofas at the back. They also clearly welcome dogs in the pub, with water bowls being provided for them on Jakob's July 2010 visit.

They have 4 real ales on tap; in July 2010 they had Sambrook Wandle and Sambrook Junction, T.E.A., and one other on. There is an extensive wine list and a decent if not outstanding collection of spirits.

The pub also serves food, with a daily menu; as of July 2010 prices range from about £7.50 for sausage and mash to about £15 for steak and chips. Jakob had an excellent burger, which was properly medium-rare and came with chips and very good home-made coleslaw (£8). They also do Sunday roasts, which look good.

Jakob's verdict: The pub's quality took a nosedive prior to the 2010 change of management, but thankfully it is now back on form. In comparison to the Victoria Inn down the road; the Montpelier is quieter and has fewer annoying hipsters, with more of a laid-back proper pub feel.
