Slum clearance - none of this housing was particularly wonderful - in the first half of the 20th century, and the devastation caused by WWII bombing, led to the construction of a large amount of council housing.
At the time of writing (June 2008), Canning Town is undergoing regeneration as part of the Thames Gateway regeneration scheme.
