A pleasant, busy gastropub on Lordship Lane in East Dulwich.
Refurbished in the mid-2000s from an earlier, less salubrious incarnation, this is now clearly a firm favourite in an area well-known for its young middle-class parents. If this means that weekends can get particularly busy (and noisy), there's still plenty of room, with seating on high couches along the front windows, more tables stretching back into the (rather darker) recesses which widen a little towards the narrow beer garden out the back. There are also some tables on the road in front, under canopies.
Decor is functional and not too overwhelmingly trendy, with bare stone floors, and wooden tables. Drinks can be bought from the bar, but food is table service only. Staff are friendly, though the table service can be a little slow to arrive at busy times.
There are two handpulls for ale on the bar, serving Ruddles IPA and Weasel (brewed at local pub the Florence) on a June 2009 visit. Draught lagers include Peroni, Erdinger, and Budvar (£3.50/pint), and they have Aspall's and Bulmer's ciders on draught. A lime and soda costs £1.50.
Food is served until 10pm (9:30pm on Sunday), and the menu covers a good range of smaller and larger dishes, brunch (served 11am to 1pm at the weekend), and desserts, with vegetarian options picked out in green photo of menu in June 2009. Ewan has had the aubergine 'steak' burger (£6.50) photo on a number of occasions and it's always been a highlight, with a thick slab of what's billed as feta cheese, as well harissa on an onion sourdough bun. It comes with a small pot of what seems like hummous, though unfortunately chips (good quality, nicely fried) are served separately (£3), though with aioli for dipping.
