A large but welcoming pub in Chigwell Row, around 15 minutes' walk away from Grange Hill Station.
Kat and Rick visited during a Saturday afternoon country ramble in October 2012, and after previous beer disappointments they were very glad to see a large pile of empty ale casks in the car park.
Inside there were four handpumps, including Hewitts' UnHung Hero and Red Menis (both well-kept and tasty). There was also a huge wall of wine bottles to the side of the bar.
The bar staff were at least ten years younger than any of the clientele (including us!), but they were friendly and didn't seem to mind the slight muddiness of our walking boots. The relatively low ceilings and and lovely warm fire (real, but behind a perspex screen) made the atmosphere very cosy on an early autumn evening, despite most of the pub being pretty empty.
We didn't try the food, but the menu looked like the usual gastropub fare and prices (wild mushroom risotto £10, burger £12).
