Independent coffee shop in Whitechapel, roughly equidistant from Tower Gateway, Aldgate East, and Shadwell stations.

It's not a large space, but there's a good variety of seating including sofas, armchairs, a couple of high stools at a counter, and regular chairs and tables, the latter seemingly recycled from school use. The floor is hard-wearing rubber matting, and exposed tube lighting runs along the ceiling. The walls are covered with posters advertising films and events from the 1990s onwards: Friends, Ghost the Musical, Seven Years in Tibet, and the 2012 Paralympic games. Piles of magazines and board games sit on the tables, and a notice board is filled with flyers for local events.

They specialise in coffee, so the tea options are limited to regular tea, earl grey, and two or three herbal teas. Food options include soup, croissants, cakes, and pre-made baguettes, toasties, and sandwiches; the latter can be heated up in a sandwich press on request.

Kake visited on a Friday morning in June 2017. There were a couple of other customers in when I arrived around 11:15am, and more turned up while I was there, some apparently regulars. Music was playing, not too loud.

A ham and cheese croissant (£2.25) photo was fine, though would have been better served on a plate than in a brown paper bag, as the oils from the melted cheese quickly soaked through onto the table. I also had a mug of rooibos (£1.30), which was fine.

Accessibility: A large step to get in. Toilets not checked.
