It's smaller than one might expect, seating just 15 inside and 4 more under an awning on the pavement out the front. However, it doesn't feel crowded; the tables are set well apart from each other, and large windows on two sides let in the light.

Shelves along one wall hold a large selection of interesting soft drinks (Fentimans, San Pellegrino, Cawston Press), and a glass-fronted display counter offers a range of sandwich fillings and sweet pastries. An eclectic collection of objects dangles from a gantry overhead: a child's xylophone, a metal watering can, wireframe hearts, and even a small upside-down wooden chair.

Kake visited on a Monday afternoon in June 2019. There were three other customers when I arrived around 2pm, and several others were in and out while I was there. Kiss FM was playing, perhaps a touch louder than necessary.

I was hoping for a cooked breakfast, but they stop serving breakfasts at 11am, so I had a bagel with smoked salmon, cream cheese, lemon juice, and cracked black pepper (£4) photo. The bagel was fine, lightly toasted and with the requisite amount of chew. The smoked salmon was fine but I'm not convinced the lemon juice was a good idea — it tasted like it came from a bottle. A cup of tea (£1.50) was a generous size and served weak as requested.

They have free WiFi, which worked fine when we tried it; network name and password are on a sign dangling among the other objects.

Accessibility: A step to get in. No obvious customer toilet.
