Pub in Dartford.

Tucked away in a side street off the main road, this isn't a pub you'd stumble across by accident — unless, that is, you'd come up from Dartford's modernised town centre for a walk around St Edmund's Pleasance on the other side of the street.

It's a small space, wrapped around the U-shaped bar and opening out at one side to an equally-small back room. A pool table almost fills the other side, while a dartboard sits in a long alcove with a dedicated oche. The decor is traditional: patterned carpet, padded banquettes, dark-varnished chairs and tables. Brass plaques on the wooden bar gantry carry words of "wisdom" such as "A friend in need is a bloody nuisance". There's a beer garden of some kind at the back.

Kake visited on a Wednesday afternoon in November 2015. There were a couple of other customers in when I arrived around 2pm, making conversation with the bar staff. No music was playing, but a flatscreen was showing daytime TV with the sound on.

There were three real ales on: Marstons Pedigree (£3.40/pint), Harvey's Sussex Best, and Adnams Ghost Ship. The Pedigree was well-kept and fresh-tasting.

Accessibility: A step to get in. Another step to the toilets and some of the seating. The pub has its own car park.
