Good Beer Guide pub in Leyton next to St Patrick's Cemetery.
Note: As of July 2012, the freehold and contents of the Birkbeck Tavern are advertised as being for sale; see archived PDF. We aren't sure whether the pub is staying open during all this.
Comprises two separate bars (one with pool table, the main one larger and likely to show horse racing on TV or host darts matches) along with a pleasant back garden and upstairs function room which is often used by the Masons.
Real ale is served, including an own-branded "Rita's Special". No food, although bar snacks are available (this sometimes extends to filled rolls, but they are nothing special).
On Kake and bob's visit on a Wednesday late evening in May 2011, the interior was notably brightly lit. Service was friendly and informative. Music was playing occasionally — perhaps a jukebox?
Flash's verdict: Generally accepted by the locals to be the best pub in Leyton and this is evidenced by CAMRA awards.
