It underwent [https://www.kentishtowner.co.uk/2018/08/02/classic-boozer-sir-richard-steele-in-belsize-park-reopens/ a substantial refurb] in 2018, and is now quite different from the way it was before (see older version of this page for a pre-refurb description).
This pub comprises mainly a large room curving around a prominent bar area, with a number of smaller but quite capacious rooms tucked away behind the bar in various directions. There's a large beer garden outside, just off the street, with plenty of tables and some cover.

The painted ceiling mural has been retained, but the curios and paraphernalia of its pre-refurb life have been swept away to produce a totally new and notably uncluttered look. There's a generous amount of standing space around the bar, though no bar stools — all the seating is around the edge of the room, a combination of banquettes, low stools, upright chairs, and high stools at high tables. Along with the high ceiling and large leaded windows on two sides (part clear, part dimpled glass), this makes the place seem much more spacious than it was before [https://www.flickr.com/photos/kake_pugh/44586030502/ photo].
The most striking feature of the pub is that it's crammed with antique curious, signs and ephemera. There's a painted ceiling which isn't quite the match of the Sistine Chapel but is still somewhat impressive. Seating is comfortable, but the place gets very busy of a Friday evening, with a range of clientele from long-time regulars to local kids.

Around the back of the bar are a couple of cosier spaces, one of which has a backlit stained glass depiction of Sir Richard himself. A doorway leads from here through to a dining room which didn't seem to be in use on our visit, except for storage of a few boxes.
On a visit in June 2008, ales on handpump were Bass, Adnam's East Green Carbon Neutral, and a tasty pint of Flowers IPA (which they had on offer at £2/pint). Other standard lagers were offered, as well as a wine list.

[[Kake]] visited on a Tuesday afternoon in September 2018. There were just two other customers when I arrived a little before 2:30pm. Music was playing, not too loud. The handpumps were clipped for Sharp's Doom Bar, Portobello Star, and Adnams Southwold Bitter. A pint of lime and soda was £2.
Thai food is served noon-3pm and 6pm-10pm Monday, noon-3pm and 6pm-10:30pm Tuesday to Friday, noon-10:30pm Saturday, and noon-10pm Sunday. Mains are around £7, and my noodles were perfectly decent and attractively presented.

Accessibility: A fairly high ridge at the threshold, but flatter access at the side door (although this is accessed via the beer garden and there's a lockable gate between there and the street). Once you're in, there's no steps to the bar, seating, or accessible toilet.
