Pub near Fenchurch Street Station in the City.
This is a small pub in a narrow street just behind the station, and unlike so many places in central London, still retains the feel of a locals' pub with regular drinkers and pub social events, and evidence of this is in the decorations. The bar is to the rear of the ground-level room, and there are about four tables (two of them higher, with stools). There are further bar stools around the edge of the room.
There are five handpulls on the bar, offering Doom Bar on two, and three guest ales on Ewan's October 2011 visit: Brains Dark, Caledonian Flying Scotsman (£1.75/half) and one other.
The 2011 Good Beer Guide says there's food at lunchtimes only and a pub quiz on the first Tuesday of the month. The food menu on display in October 2011 was dominated by solid pub standards (sandwiches, burgers, scampi and chips, et al.). There are signs for an upstairs room, though Ewan did not check if it was open.
Music was playing quietly on Ewan's afternoon visit in October 2011, and there were a handful of other drinkers, quite possibly regulars. The atmosphere was pleasant and old-fashioned. There were adverts for a house ale being launched at the end of the month.
Accessibility: Gents toilets are down some very narrow winding stairs, while ladies are upstairs.
