Oscar’s is a café in Ladywell Road.

The café is in a single-unit shop. In the front, where the counter area is, there are stools at high tables, and a large print of Klimt’s “Woman in Gold”. Down steps towards the back there are a few standard seats at normal tables. Out the back there is an attractive outdoor area with wooden tables and a variety of seating. According to their Facebook, they refurbished in late 2018. There is a blue and grey paint scheme.

There are various cakes, brownies, croissants etc. on offer. They have a lunch menu (11.30am–3pm) with various light bites, including a “daily stew/curry”. The stew/curry is by “The Soulful Food Co in Deptford” so presumably a large vat of the day’s stew or curry is delivered each morning.

Rowley Birkin QC visited late morning/lunchtime on a Thursday in April 2019. There were 10 or so other customers, with people coming and going. He had an americano, a croissant, a tea, and a Thai red curry. Unusually, the croissant was served in the French way: just a plain croissant, with no butter or jam. The curry (£6), though on the small side, arrived quickly, and was very, very good; Rowley will definitely have another stew/curry if the opportunity arises. Payment is by card only.

There is a mixture of music (mostly pop), not too loud (but sometimes a little intrusive). The staff are welcoming and attentive. There is no WiFi. There are several electrical sockets (which include USB ports).

Child-friendliness: There are some high chairs. There is a baby-change table outside the toilet, but it looks inconvenient because it folds down over the washbasin used by other customers.

Accessibility: Small step to get in. Further steps to get to the toilet.

There are good transport links: it is close to Ladywell station, and bus stops are practically outside.
