This was previously the main premises of the Japan Centre, but in September 2017 the major part of the business moved to Panton Street, where it operates as a basement food hall.
The Shaftesbury Avenue location now mainly sells ceramics and books (despite the name), and is intended to remain open until September 2018 at least (and longer if they decide to extend their lease). When Kake visited in October 2017, they also had a small selection of sake and a few packaged snack items, but the focus was clearly on the ceramics and books.
Accessibility: Access is via escalators; there don't seem to be stairs or a lift. It's quite cramped, with narrow aisles.
