It originated as a weekly market stall at Spitalfields Market in early 2006, before opening in a permanent location on Lower Marsh. It stocks a wide range of yarns, including both British brands and imports from the USA, Canada, Europe and Japan. The range includes fibres such as cotton, wool, alpaca, and silk, from both well-known brands and smaller, independent producers. They also sell knitting and craft books and patterns, plus needles and accessories from the likes of Clover, Brittany, Knitpicks, Addi and more.

The Lower Marsh location had an alcohol license, allowing them to sell Weston's Organic Cider, Brothers Pear Cider, bottled beers, and wine, as well as soft drinks, for consumption on the premises, but we haven't confirmed whether this is still the case in the new location.
IKL has a special atmosphere: laidback, relaxed, independent. The shop doubles as a meeting place for their weekly knitting group (who also get out and about meeting in pubs across London), and they hold regular events both in the shop and at other venues. There are regular classes, film nights, book signings, workshops, a spinning group and various crafty soirees, including London's first knitting-book group (the Kniterati).

[[Sarah]] visited in March 2011 and adds that the shop now hosts a friendly (and quiet!) Chihuahua called Pandora who sometimes sleeps in a window display. Too adorable!
It's the first knitting shop in the UK with a licence - their fully-stocked fridge includes Weston's Organic Cider, Brothers Pear Cider, bottled beers, wine and soft drinks.
