Small Japanese restaurant on Chandos Place near Trafalgar Square. It's set over two levels, with a mezzanine overlooking the ground floor; each floor probably seats about 20 people, with the ground floor being more cosy and the mezzanine being lighter and airier.

Kake and Susz visited on a Thursday lunchtime in December 2008. We hadn't booked, but they managed to seat us on the mezzanine.

We both went for set lunches; Kake had the buta shougayaki (pan-fried belly pork with soy sauce and ginger, £6.50) and Susz the chicken katsu (deep-fried breadcrumbed chicken, £7). Both came with miso soup, pickles, and rice; they're advertised as coming with salad as well, but this appears to mean salad leaves on the plate with the main course, rather than the separate little salad bowl that some places (e.g. Ribon) do.

The belly pork was sliced thinly, almost like bacon, and braised in a tasty sauce. I'd happily order it again. The rice was fine, not overcooked like some I've had lately. Susz seemed pleased with her chicken katsu, saying it was good and crispy.

Kake's verdict: I'd like to come back and try their sushi. The set menus (from £16) look like good value in the evening.

Accessibility: One step up to get in. Toilets are down a flight of stairs.

Getting here: The most convenient Tube station is Charing Cross Station. Come out of Exit 7, turn right, and when you reach the end of the road the restaurant will be directly ahead of you across the street.
