Restaurant and delicatessen in St John's Wood.
It styles itself after a New York deli, and focuses on Jewish comfort food. The left-hand side is home to a deli counter for takeaways, while the right-hand side has diner-style seating.
The decor in the restaurant side is primarily monochrome, relieved by the burgundy pleather used to upholster the banquettes and upright chairs filling the room. Framed black-and-white photos of city scenes hang on the white-painted walls, and the art deco lampshades overhead are similarly black on the outside and white on the inside. Black vinyl covers the floor.
Kake visited on a Tuesday lunchtime in January 2020. There were about a dozen other customers when I arrived at 12:30pm, and at least a dozen more had joined them by the time I left an hour later. Music was playing quietly, almost inaudible under the sound of conversation.
Smoked salmon and scrambled eggs with a bagel (£10) photo was a good-sized portion. The eggs were handled well — not overly bulked out by milk, and not at all overcooked. I would have preferred just a touch more seasoning if eating them on their own, but with the smoked salmon they were fine. The salmon was good-quality, cut thick and not too salty. The bagel was fine, fresh and with a good flavour and chew. New green pickles on the side (£3.25) were excellent — crisp and delicious, with just the right amount of salt and vinegar.
Earl Grey tea (£3.25) was made with a Twinings teabag and served in a decent-sized pot.
Service was helpful, friendly, and efficient, with staff constantly circulating to check whether anyone needed anything but without the slightest hint of pushiness or upselling. A 12.5% service charge was auto-added to the bill.
Kake's verdict: I did like it here, but I felt the tea was extremely overpriced given it was made with a non-premium teabag.
Child-friendliness: They have at least two highchairs. There were two toddlers and a baby in during our visit. One of the toilet cubicles is marked as having baby change facilities.
Laptop-friendliness: Several of the tables have plug sockets next to them. They have WiFi (ask staff for the password). Another customer was working on their laptop throughout our visit.
Accessibility: A small step to get in, about an inch or so. No steps to the toilets.
