Fujiyama was a Japanese restaurant and noodle bar in Brixton, just off Coldharbour Lane. It closed for good in June 2017. The information below is retained for historical purposes.
A Japanese restaurant and noodle bar in Brixton, just off Coldharbour Lane. It is also sometimes referred to as "New Fujiyama". Fujiyama has been a stalwart of the Brixton food scene for quite some time, and offers dependable Japanese food at reasonable prices. Somewhat like Wagamama, seating is at trestle tables with long benches, packed into the cramped space of the restaurant's two rooms. Service is perfunctory but not unfriendly. On Ewan's visit on a Thursday evening in May 2009, our group was seated quickly (I've never usually had to wait for very long to be seated on previous visits), and drinks orders were taken fairly swiftly. They were happy to bring tapwater, though a small range of wines and bottled beers are available. We went for a mixture of sushi dishes, some avocado and cucumber makimono rolls (£3.50 each for six small rolls), as well as orders of yamogobo (a sort of pickled carrot) nigiri and spinach nigiri (£3 for two). They were brought out together on one large plate with plenty of wasabi, as well as ginger slices, and were sufficient for three people (if perhaps not the hungriest three people) photo. The food was all fine. We also had a side of seasonal asparagus spears, grilled with a yakitori sauce and garnished with onions (£5), very tasty photo. On itsbruce's visit on a Saturday evening in July 2010, the chosen starters were grilled asparagus in yakitori sauce (£4.95) and spinach ohitashi (a roll of boiled spinach in an unspecified dressing topped with toasted sesame seed, spring onion and fried shallots at £4.35), both of which were well recieved. Mains of Salmon Chilli Men (£6.90) and Yasai Katsu Don (£6.45) were also enjoyable. The consensus at the table was that the cooking is much more imaginative and well rounded than that of Wagamama, in more pleasant surroundings. Fujiyama offers takeaway and delivery services as well (you can check on the website whether they will deliver to your postcode). Delivery is offered 5pm-11pm Monday to Friday, and noon-11pm Saturday and Sunday.
