The Fox was a pub on Kingsland Road, at the edge of Dalston. It closed down for redevelopment in June 2018.

The information below is retained for historical purposes.
It's housed in a grand Victorian pub building dating to 1881 (though with a longer history), and is set out with a blend of distressed leather couches with low tables, and larger wooden dining tables and chairs, along with eclectic decor as is to be expected from this type of establishment photo of interior. The main room is on several levels (the bar is up a few steps at the back), and there's a small ante-room to the side with a few other tables and a TV screen. There are also several tables outside for smokers and those taking advantage of the sun.

On Ewan's Sunday visit in June 2009, the place was almost empty except for a few other people, so there was no shortage of places to sit. Soul and easy listening music was playing perhaps a touch too loudly in the main space (there was a Rod Stewart compilation playing at the point we decided it would be sensible to leave), but it was a little quieter in the side room (the TV sound was not on).

It spent some time as an Italian-focused gastropub around 2009 (see earlier version of this page) but switched its focus to craft beer following an early-2012 refurbishment.
Service was extremely friendly and gracious. They tend to focus on table service here, which explains why the bar is somewhat hidden at the back, and as such service is added to the bill as a matter of course.

It's housed in a grand Victorian pub building dating to 1881 (though with a longer history). The main space is filled with mismatched wooden tables and chairs photo, and there's also a cosier side area with banquettes. Stairs lead to a roof terrace, and there's also ground-floor outside seating out the front. The main area also, unusually, houses a vending machine selling bottled craft beers.
There are two handpulls for ale, with Landlord and London Pride available on Ewan's visit. They also have draught taps for Fuller's Honey Dew, Freedom lager, keg Courage Best Bitter, and San Miguel, amongst other usual suspects. As one might expect, there's also a pretty extensive wine list, as well as some cocktails. Pints of Coke were priced at £2.95.

Kake visited on a Tuesday early evening in August 2016. There were a handful of other customers when I arrived around 5:15pm. Hip-hop and R&B music was playing, not too loud.
Happily proclaiming itself a gastropub, the Fox serves an Italian food menu (pastas and pizzas included) photo of menu in June 2009 for prices which are perhaps a little higher than to be expected in this gentrifying area, bordering nearby De Beauvoir Town. The menu is pretty long, and on Sunday is augmented by roasts (the vegetarian option was an aubergine dish). Ewan and Jo took advantage of the pizza offer (two large pizzas for £15) and were perfectly happy with the (very crispy) thin crust pizza. A basic margherita was satisfying photo, while the Greek pizza was topped with halloumi and feta cheese, rocket and olives photo, and chilli oil and pepper were offered without asking.

Three real ales were on — Weird Beard Hops Maiden, One Mile End Docker's Delight, and Siren Under Current — as well as two real ciders: Wessex Medium and Sandford Shaky Bridge. A pint of lime and soda was £2, but this somewhat high price was because the soda came out of bottles, and they did warn us of this beforehand. Service was friendly and helpful.

According to their website as of August 2016, food is served 5pm-10pm Mon-Fri, 1pm-10pm Sat, and 1pm-9pm Sun photo of menu as of August 2016.

They have free WiFi, with the network name and password printed on the menus.

Accessibility: Two steps to get in, and two more steps to the bar. Step from seating area to toilets. The ladies' has cramped cubicles and (on our visit) a completely dark lobby, making it something of an adventure to work out where to go.
