Of all the excellent pubs which surround the increasingly middle-class enclave of London Fields in Hackney, the Dove sets itself apart, both for the extensive beer selection, the excellent food and the lively atmosphere that comes from the warren of wood-panelled rooms, always filled with people.

On our visit on a Thursday night, most of the tables were already taken, and it was the separate dining area where we were seated (which turned out to be far quieter than the main pub).

The beer selection is largely Belgian, and they make a point of serving most of the 101 beers listed on their menu in the correct glassware. On draught are Stella, Jupiler, Hoegaarden, Leffe Blonde and Leffe Brune, Belle Vue Kriek, Liefman's Frambozen, Fruhli Strawberry, De Koninck, Delirium Tremens (note: 9% abv), Peetermans Artois, Amstel, Becks, Staropramen and Guinness. On our visit we sampled the Orval (a smooth and well-rounded trappist beer) and a St-Feuillien Blonde (which had a hint of tart spiciness, and very drinkable).

The menu is an odd blend of Thai and traditional English pub influences, with plenty of burger and sausage options (see the website for menus). Our vegetarian burgers were served in ciabatta buns and very tasty, and the chips were cooked perfectly. Service was attentive.

The Dove is worth a visit, even if you're not passing the area (Broadway Market is a short walk from the southern end of Mare St, or from London Fields station; it's a little further to walk, but still accessible, from Bethnal Green).
