Of all the excellent pubs which surround the increasingly middle-class enclave of London Fields in Hackney, the Dove sets itself apart, both for the extensive beer selection, the excellent food and the lively atmosphere that comes from the warren of wood-panelled rooms, always filled with people.

On our visit on a Thursday night, most of the tables were already taken, and it was the separate dining area where we were seated (which turned out to be far quieter than the main pub). Another Sunday evening visit saw the place again packed out (with the addition of a jazz band), but with a few small tables to be had in the dining area.

The beer selection is largely Belgian, and they make a point of serving most of the 101 beers listed on their menu in the correct glassware. On draught in November 2007 are several ales, as well as Stella, Jupiler, Hoegaarden, Leffe Blonde and Leffe Brune, Belle Vue Kriek, Liefman's Frambozen, Fruhli Strawberry, De Koninck, Delirium Tremens (note: 9% abv), Peetermans Artois, Amstel, Becks, Staropramen and Guinness. On our visit we sampled the Orval (a smooth and well-rounded trappist beer) and a St-Feuillien Blonde (which had a hint of tart spiciness, and very drinkable). In April 2008, the ales were Old Speckled Hen, London Pride and a Crouch Vale Bewers Gold.

They also have a good wine selection, with large glasses of wine (available for about 7 or 8 wines) coming in at only £4.25, and very drinkable at that. Bottles range from £12-21 (the top red wine was a Chateau Musar Hochar et Fils offering).

The menu (like the decor) is an odd blend of Thai and traditional English pub influences, with plenty of burger and sausage options (see the website for menus). Our vegetarian burgers (around £7-8) were served in ciabatta buns and very tasty, and the chips were cooked perfectly. On another visit, the roasted aubergine (£10.50) has much to recommend it, with lots of tasty vegetables chopped and packed onto an aubergine base, with grilled cheese on top. Service was attentive.

The Dove is worth a visit, even if you're not passing the area (Broadway Market is a short walk from the southern end of Mare Street, or from London Fields Station; it's a little further to walk, but still accessible, from Bethnal Green).
