Bakery and cafe in located under the railway arches of Herne Hill Station. It has seven spaciously arranged tables with two seats each, giving plenty of space for pushchairs or wheelchairs, two additional seats on high stools at a table near the window, and four more seats outside across two tables. The aroma of freshly baked bread is pervasive, as nearly a third of the shop space is given up to ovens and racks. Reduced price bags of rolls and sliced breads were on display near the entrance and tills, but most items are behind the large glass display and include a selection of sweet and savoury pastries and cakes. There is a good selection of (clearly marked) vegan savoury snacks including two kinds of sausage roll, vegetable samosa, and a veggie pie, and the date-and-nut based energy balls are also marked as vegan. There is a toast station with sliced bread and spreads including butter, jams, peanut butter and marmite and a large glass jug with cucumber water for customers. Sandwiches, panini and soup are also served. On Bec’s November 2019 visit, pop music was playing fairly loud, but not so loud it made conversation impossible. There were a few others when I arrived around 10:30am, and a few more arrived as was leaving, but at this time, most were take-away customers. I had a regular cappuccino with soya milk (£2.60) which was served with a small ginger biscuit, and a vegan sage & onion sausage roll (£2). The pastry was light and flaky, and the filling well proportioned and well seasoned, not too sagey. Service was friendly and efficient; I was asked if I wanted the sausage roll warmed up and if I wanted chocolate on my coffee. Child-friendliness: At least one highchair is available. Babycino is listed on the menu as free. Accessibility: Step-free throughout, including the including the toilets. However the toilets are located at the back, behind a several ovens in near constant use. Once inside, there are two cubicles with handrails and alarms, but the cubicles themselves are somewhat cramped and I’m unsure if there is enough space to accommodate a wheelchair. I didn’t notice any nappy changing facilities. <div class="last_verified">Last visited by Bec, November 2019. Opening hours taken from Google Maps, November 2019.</div>
