The rather confusingly-named Hammersmith & City Line runs from Hammersmith in the west to Barking in the east. It doesn't really go very close to the City; although it does stop at Liverpool Street, the name is quite misleading. An alternative name has been suggested, by analogy with the Bakerloo Line; the Hammerchapel Line. With Hammersmith at one end, and Whitechapel very near the limit of the most useful part of the other, it's a perfect portmanteau.
