The latest in a succession of bars to take up residence in this location under the railway bridge behind Fenchurch Street Station (mostly recently, it's been a Pitcher and Piano). The current occupant opened in May 2010 and is the sister venue to the original branch on City Road.

The upstairs is a fairly bland space with a range of long tables, some with high seats and others lower to the ground. Drinks and food are provided via waitress service (the servers are all uniformly female, it seems, and dressed in pseudo-Bavarian costume to fit the theme). There's not much atmosphere upstairs, but a large cellar bar allows for many hundreds more drinkers in a more congenial setting.

The drinks range is good if pricy, with a range of German lagers including Krombacher, Erdinger Hefe Weissbier (and the lovely Dunkel version as well), Lowenbrau and Warsteiner. Drinks are served in the usual measures or in two-pint steins (the latter are £8.10, while pints are £4.20).

The food menu focuses on German food, of course. Ewan tried a couple of the sausage-based dishes, a small dish of Nürnberger Bratwürstl (five small bratwurst sausages with pretzel and a lot of sauerkraut, £5.50) as well as sharing a Bavarian Beerhouse Wurstplatte (two frankfurters, a bratwurst and three Nürnberger sausages with mashed potato, mustard and a vast quantity of the sauerkraut, £12.50). Both had good quality sausages, if rather more sauerkraut than I could eat.
