A popular, independently-run bakery and cafe on Stoke Newington Church Street. They have a range of speciality breads (all baked on the premises), plus filled rolls, pizzas, pastries and so on. Their standard white loaf tends to be small but satisfyingly dense. It's quite small inside and can get very busy with local families, especially at lunchtimes and the weekend when the queuing system can descend into chaos. Seating-wise, inside there are a counters with stools along the windows, plus four tables outside: two on Church Street itself (excellent for people-watching) and two round the side which are a bit quieter. On her July 2014 morning visit, [[Kat]] had an enormous latte and a pain au chocolat for £4.10 (the price is less than that for takeaway), and felt very civilised indeed sitting on one of the outside tables. Accessibility: one low step to get in. <div class="last_verified">Last visited by [[Kat]], 1 July 2014. Opening hours taken from the Spence Bakery website, July 2014.</div>
