Licensed vegetarian café in New Cross, between New Cross and New Cross Gate stations. Out of the Brew is fairly small, just a single unit shop space on the busy New Cross Road. It seats about 30, almost all inside, some out in the back garden. Ordinary chairs plus some benches at wooden tables and high stools at breakfast bar at the back. Rowley Birkin QC visited on a Monday morning in December 2019; four other customers initially, others came and went (some just for takeaway coffees etc.). The staff (four?) were very friendly. Several customers looked like art students from Goldsmiths which is nearby. At lunchtime people came pouring in. Music was on lightly in the background. There's possibly a resident dog (poodle/terrier cross?). Food and drink: There's not much of a menu, just a couple of sandwiches in the morning (I had avocado+rocket and liked it) plus pastries etc. They apparently do soup at lunchtime. There were no meat products as far as I could see, and their website says they "endeavour to cater for vegetarian, vegan and gluten free customers". They're licensed, and have a cabinet of bottled beers etc. from various small breweries, though I wouldn't naturally come here if I wanted a beer. I had an Americano (£2.20) and a tea (£2.50), both fine. There's good Wi-Fi (100 Mbps, stable, network "OOTB Guest" - password on wall behind counter). Several electrical sockets (some with USB). Several people were working on laptops. Child-friendliness: One child present when I visited. I didn't notice any high chairs, and there were no baby changing facilities in the toilet (not really room anyway). Accessibility: Step 3-4 cm to get in, otherwise level inside. The back garden is up 4 or 5 steps. The toilet is small and difficult to manoeuvre in. Rowley Birkin QC's verdict: I really like this place. Staff and customers all considerate and friendly. It's a good place to work if it's outside the lunch period.
