Thai restaurant in Chesham. The interior has a fairly contemporary feel photo. Large cylindrical lightshades hang from a slatted wooden false ceiling, and black-and-gold artworks are on the pale-painted walls. The floor is varnished wood, tables are dark wood effect laminate, and chairs are padded pleather. Chrysanthemums sit in small glasses on the tables. Kake visited on a Wednesday evening in September 2015. I was unsurprisingly the only customer when I arrived a little after 5:30pm, though a few people popped in for takeaways during my visit, and there were two others dining in by the time I left an hour later. Easy-listening music was playing, not too loud. I started with spicy corn cakes (£4.50) photo, which looked a little greasy when they arrived, but were actually fine. The sweetcorn wasn't overcooked, as can sometimes happen with this dish. My main course of pla priew wan (sweet and sour crispy fried fish; £9.50) photo was less successful. It had plenty of vegetables as well as the fish — a good thing, in my book — but the carrots were practically raw, which didn't really enhance the dish, and there was far too much onion. The sauce had a prominent sweetness, with little sourness or depth. The accompanying rice was unevenly cooked, with some of it quite mushy. The fish itself was fine, though, not overcooked. Service was efficient, and tap water arrived swiftly in a glass with ice. My starter and main were a little more similar than I'd have really liked (I didn't realise the fish would be battered and deep-fried, and the sweet-and-sour sauce was too reminiscent of the chilli sauce my starter came with), and I'd have appreciated a warning of this from the waiter. Kake's verdict: OK, but nothing special. Accessibility: Two large steps to get in. Ramp to the gents' toilets; three steps with a sturdy handrail on one side to the ladies'.
