The Beckton Alp was originally nothing more than a huge waste heap from Beckton gasworks (the largest gasworks in Europe, closed in 1969); it was landscaped in the 1980s to make a huge dry ski slope. The ski slope is no more, but the Alp is still there, providing a viewpoint over the [[Locale Royal Docks|Royal Docks]]. <div class="getting_here">Getting here: the Alp is located just southeast of the junction of Newham Way and Woolwich Manor Way.</div> See also: * [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beckton Wikipedia entry on Beckton], which has some information on the Alp * [http://blog.stodge.org/205 Stodge.org blog post] * [http://www.flickr.com/photos/tims/sets/72057594096123093/detail/ TimS's photoset on Flickr] * [http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?ll=51.519245,0.061734&t=k&z=17&q=beckton Aerial photo from Google maps]
