Sun Luen Snack Bar was a small cafe and bakery in Chinatown. It closed down some time in July or August 2016. As of August 2016 the premises are occupied by a "deep fried chicken breast and bubble tea" place called Good Friend.

Small cafe and bakery in Chinatown.

The decor is very basic, with low hard stools at functional tables seating no more than 20 people at the very most. Paper napkins sit in plastic beakers on the tables, and the window to the street is filled with a display of egg tarts, buns, and other Chinese baked goods.

Kake visited on a Wednesday afternoon in April 2016. There were three other customers in when I arrived around 4pm, one of them apparently a regular. No music was playing.

The staff member on duty greeted me and took my order as soon as I entered, and brought my tea and egg tart very quickly afterwards.

The tea was quite milky, and not too strong or tannic. The egg tart was fresh and very good; the pastry was rich and crumbly and not too sweet, and the egg filling was very smooth and light. Together these came to £3.

Note that it's cash-only.

Kake's verdict: This is a useful little place for a quiet and relatively cheap sit-down in central London, and I'd happily pop in again. I particularly want to try their dou hua (soft sweetened beancurd), as I've heard good things about it.

Accessibility: A small step to get in. If there is a customer toilet, it's in the basement.
