Le Tran Cafe, SE16 3TP

Vietnamese cafe and restaurant in Bermondsey. It also does some Chinese dishes.

It's a small space, seating only around 35-40 people on utilitarianly-upholstered chairs at wood-topped tables. The floor is also wood, and there's some attractive geometric wood panelling on the walls beneath a dado rail. Above the rail, large paintings of rural scenes liven up dove-grey paintwork. The room is dimly lit with a combination of bare bulbs and basketwork-style lampshades.

Kake visited on a Thursday lunchtime in June 2019. Arriving around 12:15pm, I was the only customer at first, but two others turned up while I was there. No music was playing.

Rare beef pho (£7.50 on the lunch menu) photo was a reasonable if unexciting example of the genre. The broth was light and well-seasoned, but a little bland. The beef was not as rare as I like, and a little chewier than ideal. The noodles were fine, though, nicely softened and separated after a short soak in the broth.

Service was friendly. A small bowl of prawn crackers was placed on the table as I sat down, and tap water arrived immediately on request in a chilled jug taken straight from the fridge.

Accessibility: A step to get in. No further steps to the toilet.
