Tapas restaurant in Selsdon, the second branch of the original in Purley.

The walls are tiled with two patterns, one geometric and the other more flowery and ornate. Wine bottles are neatly arranged within recessed shelving along the ceiling juncture and in dramatic diagonal slashes which break up the tiling, producing a somewhat busy effect to the decor. A small bar in the far corner features a terracotta faux-roof draped with ivy. The fully-glazed frontage lets in plenty of light.

Wooden chairs and tables fill the space, ready-laid with wine glasses, cutlery, and napkins. A couple of tables are also placed outside in good weather, on a small patio-like space facing the (not overly-busy) road.

Kake and friend visited on a Friday late lunchtime in September 2019. There were just two other customers when we arrived around 2pm, and this remained the case during our visit.

We went for their lunch deal (£10/head), which allowed us to choose two tapas each from a selection of 26, plus a soft drink or glass of wine. Since one of us is vegetarian, our choices were somewhat limited, but we managed to get a decent selection nevertheless.

Champiñones picantes (mushrooms with white wine, garlic, and chilli) photo had a lovely garlicky flavour, and were well-seasoned without being too salty. One of us is usually rather sceptical of mushrooms, finding them often rather bland, but we were both pleased with these.

Patatas bravas photo were fine. Spinach with garlic, chilli, cream, and cheese sauce photo wasn't overly rich, and the chilli was a great accent to the creaminess.

Berenjenas con tomate (baked aubergine with tomato sauce and cheese) photo also avoided being too rich, and the aubergines were cooked just right; nicely soft without having completely disintegrated.

Everything was served with fresh (and freshly-sliced) baguette at no charge (though butter was 70p/head). Service was friendly and helpful. A 10% service charge was added to the bill.

Kake's verdict: I was surprised by how good it was given the rather suburban location, and would like to come back to try the meat and fish options.

Accessibility: A steepish ramp to get in. Toilets not checked.
