A steak restaurant in Mayfair, just off Regent Street.

This self-proclaimed New York-style steak house is replete with dark wooden furniture and panelling, heavy cotton napkins and chunky cutlery, lending it the requisite gravitas for its location. Although dominated by the kind of besuited business diners you might expect, service is friendly, welcoming and prompt, and on both occasions Ewan has visited at lunchtime it has been possible to get a table with little trouble. You can even sit at one of the bar stools, which is the perfect place to enjoy a burger if you're dining alone.

The menu is dominated, as expected, by the steaks, and they offer a range of meat, with an additional selection of daily specials on a chalkboard. Their speciality is USDA beef, though they also offer prime Irish and British meat too, in various cuts and weights. Even a simple 220g strip steak on the lunchtime set menu (two courses for £18) photo is sufficient to whet my appetite, and is cooked just as requested (in Ewan's case, rare), served with a bowl of very excellent fries. Given the quality of the meat, the only thing I could follow up with on the dessert menu was the ice cream, but this went down very easily, creamy and clearly of a similarly high quality.

The other highlight of the lunch menu is the Goodman burger photo, which comes in at a weighty £15, but that price is inclusive of any additional toppings (fried onions, mushrooms, cheese, and so forth), as well as their superlative fries. The burger is certainly not small, and the patty itself is excellent quality meat, which they'll cook to order (no less than medium rare, but this still leaves a good amount of succulent red meat in the chunky burger). Special mention should also go to the bun, a highly glazed slightly sweet brioche bread, with perfectly complements the burger, making it a joy to eat.

The bar offers a range of wines, as well as having Meantime Helles on draught.

Ewan's verdict: Would happily pop back in for food there any time I feel a craving for red meat, even when on my own (which is how I ate there the first time I visited).
