Thatched House, IG11 9PG

Pub in Barking.

It's located away from the main centre of Barking, adjoining the A13 and Barking Industrial Park, about 10 minutes' walk from Upney Station.

The decor is rather like that of a run-down nightclub, with smeary mirrors lining one wall, a sparkly black veneer on the gantry above the bar, high stools everywhere, and spotlights mounted near the ceiling. There are two pool tables, one in the middle of the space and one on a dais at the far end.

There are no handpumps for real ale, just keg fonts for the usual Fosters, Guinness, etc. As of May 2015 food is served 12:30pm-11pm every day, and includes Kenyan food as well as standard British pub food.

Kake visited on a Thursday late lunchtime in May 2015. There were around 6 or 7 other customers in; a couple playing pool at the far end and the rest on stools lining the bar. Music was playing on the radio, not too loud. A glass of lime and soda was £1.

I decided to order from the Kenyan section of the menu, and went for sukuma wiki with ugali (greens mixed with meat, served with a cornmeal-based dough; £8) photo. The greens had good texture — nicely robust yet cooked enough not to be tough — but tasted mainly of seasoning cubes. Beef was cut into sensibly-sized pieces, and not overly chewy. The ugali was fine, though had developed a bit of a crust in the reheating. Overall, it was a bit disappointing.

Accessibility: A narrow ramp with a tight turn at the top and a narrow door to get in. The ground at the bottom of the ramp is quite bumpy too. No steps to toilets, bar, or most of the seating. The pub has its own car park. There's a limited amount of normal-height seating — the rest is on high stools.
