Spread Eagle, SW18 2PT

Young's pub in Wandsworth.

Note: According to the Aug/Sep 2020 London Drinker, as of mid-2020 the Spread Eagle has closed for "major restructuring including adding hotel rooms and reception". It seems likely that when it reopens several of our comments below will be out of date.

Inside it's like stepping back in time, as the pub has hardly seen any refurbishment in years. There are three rooms on the ground floor (and a grand staircase leading up from the front, though there's no indication that the upstairs is in use). The main room is carpeted with tables and attractive leather bench seating stretching quite far back into the building.

The other two rooms are separated by Victorian glass partitions, and both have bare floors. At the front is a room with a pool table and some benches for seating, and at the rear is the 'dining lounge' (no longer used as such it seems), which has a few tables and some large couches on a raised seating area.

The bar has eight handpulls in the main room, and four more in the front pool room, offering only Young's ordinary (£2.70) and Special, as well as Kew. There's a basic lager selection, including Amstel, as well.

Food is served from a fairly basic menu.

On a Tuesday evening in August 2009, the place was pretty quiet with only four or five people in total; the lady behind the bar amused herself on the quiz machine for a bit and by reading a paper while perched at the end of the long bar. A couple of very small TV screens were showing horse racing with the sound down low. No one was in the pool room or the lounge at all.

Accessibility: No steps to get in, and toilets are on the same level (gents at the front, ladies at the back).
