Locale: Herne Hill

Herne Hill is sandwiched between Brixton, Dulwich and Tulse Hill, and as such shares characteristics of all three. It's an overwhelmingly residential area in the SE24 postal district, with a small shopping district around Herne Hill station which has some attractive restaurants and pubs.

It is dominated by Brockwell Park, a gated park which is shut between dusk and dawn. There is a cafe in Brockwell Hall, at the centre of the park. Brockwell Lido, one of London's few remaining lidos, was regenerated in 2006/7 and reopened in 2008, and is a great place to watch the infinite variety of South London sunning themselves.

The local population is dominated by young to not-so-young families, many of whom work in the media. There are several decent primary schools, while teenagers either go to the privates in Dulwich or to state schools in Crystal Palace, Streatham and Tooting. The nearest state school is the Charter School, a comprehensive in North Dulwich.
