Golden Lion, RM1 1HR

Pub in Romford, part of Greene King's John Barras brand. It's Grade II listed.

The ceiling is low, with exposed beams, and lighting is kept dim. Scratched and worn dark-varnished floorboards lie underfoot. Oscar Wilde quotations are written here and there on the walls. Much of the seating at the front is at high chairs and tables, but there are normal-height ones further back.

The bar has ten handpumps, which on our November 2013 visit offered Colchester Red Diesel, Bombardier, Courage Directors, Young's Special, Adnams Broadside, and three other real ales, plus Weston's Twist cider. A pint of lime and soda was 94p.

Kake visited on a Thursday afternoon in November 2013. The pub was fairly full when I arrived around 2pm, and I had to walk all the way around it to find a seat. Music (Irish?) was playing, not too loud. A TV near the front was showing sport, and one further back was showing Sky News with subtitles.

According to the John Barras website as of November 2013, food is served noon-9pm every day. On our visit in the same month, the menu looked to be relatively interesting for pub food (e.g. the burger selection included a wild boar burger served with black pudding).

According to the 2011 Good Beer Guide there's live music on Wednesday and Thursday evenings.

Accessibility: A step to get in (downwards, and inside the door), and another step to get to the seating at the back and the toilets.
