El Camion was a Mexican canteen under the Westway at the top of Portobello Road. It has now closed.

The information below is retained for historical purposes.

A Mexican canteen under the Westway at the top of Portobello Road, originally called El Camino. It has since branched out with a new, larger outpost in Soho.

There's nothing pretentious about this place, which makes it a great place for some late night food or a quick lunch in this part of town. Some small tables, stools and outdoor seats are nestled alongside an open kitchen.

The menu sticks to the basics, such as tacos, burritos, quesadillas, nachosphoto of menu in July 2009, but it does them all very well without any pretentions. Dishes are served in cardboard boxes lined by foil or waxed paper, and the margarita came in a Pepsi cup. Ewan's pinto bean tacos (£4.25) photo went down very easily and were filling and tasty, while ground beef nachos (£4.45) photo got a big thumbs up from an American friend.

Ewan's verdict: Definitely worth checking out if you're a fan of Mexican food, and I'd happily return.

itsbruce's verdict: The ingredients are fresh and the food is relatively healthy (low fat, high vegetable content), but the style is very tex-mex and also very bland. I eat here when I'm in a hurry, because the service is prompt, but would otherwise go elsewhere.
