Bread Ahead, WC2H 9DA

  • 1 Monmouth Street

Bread Ahead was a small bakery just north of Seven Dials in Covent Garden. It has now closed. As of October 2018 the premises are occupied by a Korean cafe called On The Dak photo.

The information below is retained for historical purposes.

Small bakery, just north of Seven Dials in Covent Garden, opened in October 2016. The company (overseen by a former Head Baker at St John) also has a regular stall at Borough Market and offers baking classes.

As well as bread, the shop sells doughnuts, pastries, brownies and coffees/soft drinks. There is a bench inside for waiting customers, but no real table-and-chair seating.

Kat visited on a Tuesday lunchtime in October 2016. There was no queue but a couple of other customers arrived while I was there. A pesto and tomato ciabatta-style bread (£2.50) was a decent size for lunch, but disappointingly oily and chewy. There weren't any other obvious savoury lunch options, though apparently they plan to do brioche sandwiches in the near future. A chocolate brownie (£2.50) was much more enjoyable — a good size and almost fudge-like in texture.

Accessibility: One low step to get in, then level once inside. No customer toilets.

Kat's verdict: Sweets more successful than savoury, but I'll come back and try the sandwiches once they arrive.
